Assignment

  • You are to create a one-page resume and a one-page cover letter as an application for employment.
  • Use the on-line sample resume and sample cover letter as examples to follow.
  • Select a prospective employer from a Web site, personal experience, or a Career Service employment bulletin as the target recipient for your letter and resume.
  • The assignment is intended to provide a template for future applications. The grade will be based on
    • mechanics
    • completeness (all parts)
    • appearance
    • content.

1. Draft 1: (2 pages)

  • Size Limit: 2 pages total
  • Font:1 page, 10 pt. font minimum for text, 16 pt. font maximum for headings
  • Cover letter: 1 page, 12 pt. font, see Cover Letter
  • This "draft" should be a complete, printed, and polished product, NOT a "rough" draft or outline. The draft should be the best you can do. The iterative writing process is designed to make it better.
  • This assignment will be accomplished through two drafts, the first draft is (technically) ungraded by itself, but it is part of the final graded assignment:

Proofreading
  • Peer grading sheet: 1 page (or 2 if needed). This sheet should be signed by 2 peers, and it has space for 2 peer signatures.
  • You will proofread and evaluate peer resumes. You will have two proofreaders go over your first draft and mark it up with specific suggestions for revisions (not just make general comments), which you should implement as relevant. Your proofreaders must sign the grading sheet (above)

2. Draft 2, Final: (5 pages)

ALL copies of 1st draft, final drafts, and peer Grading form.
Based on feedback reviews, revise and submit the final draft of resume and cover letter.
Deliverables for Final Draft (stapled together in the following order):
  • Page 1: Grading form on top, with name, signed (at bottom) by yourself
  • Page 2: The final draft of your Cover Letter
  • Page 3: The final draft of your Resume
  • Page 4: Draft 1 of your Cover Letter
