Objective:
Practice conducting a formal evaluation of familiar (elevator) interface.
Instructions:
In this assignment your team (2 members) will evaluate the user interface for the elevators in McBryde Hall on campus.
1) Research: Examine and consider the elevator system as a whole.
- Gather data that helps you understand and describe the user experience
- What steps do users need to perform?
- What are they aware of, and what is confusing, misleading, or ambiguous?
- How do you know?
- Identify UI features or elements.
- Use graphics, pictures, or drawings to describe the elements
- Explain + and - tradeoffs associated with those features
2) Formulating claims features
- Identify 2 tasks related to using the elevator:
- Tasks should representative of typical use.
- Tasks should illustrative of issues and tradeoffs in the design.
- How does the interface affect user performance on different tasks?
- What are the top 3 problems?
3) Propose a new interface.
4) Reflection / Summary.
- Your new interface should solve the most problems
- Your new interface should generate the fewest problems
- What changes would you suggest?
- Assuming you've used this elevator prior to your study, what did you discover and learn about the system?
- Explain any surpises in the process or outcome with regard to your expectations of the system and your proposal.
Hand in:
Hard-copy of 2 page report with answers to 1-4. Bring a list of the top problems with the current interface and your proposed new interface to class.
